The Bab Ballads by W. S. Gilbert *SOLD*

£20.00

MacMillan & Co 1926 edition.

The title of this collection of light verses by W S Gilbert and illustrated by him is taken from his childhood nickname. He wrote the ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan where he used as source material some of the plot settings and characters. He developed a " topsy turvey" approach to his writing ,deriving humour by setting up a ridiculous premise and then taking it to its logical conclusion, however absurd that might be.

In good overall condition, slight discolouration on the back of the hardback.
