Published in 1822 by Archibald Constable and Co and Hurst Robinson and Co.

Published in three volumes initially anonymously as with all the Waverley novels prior to 1827 the plot centres on the arrival of a shipwrecked captain named Cleveland on Shetland which spoils a young man's developing relationship with the Troil sisters and the subsequent bitter rivalry between the two men. Scott instilled within the narrative a great sense of place , the complexity and dichotomy of human beings ruled by Scotland but Scandinavian in their way of life and traditions and the very remoteness of the land , isolated in time

1-3 volumes. Volume 1 top of the spine missing, creasing throughout the volume pages. Foxing on hardback covers. All three volumes have some minor wear and tear for 200 year old books. Beautifully aged books.
