Jane Reviews~ Fresh Water For Flowers by Valerie Perrin

I feel this heart-warming novel set in rural France will stay in my thoughts for a very long time. The best compliment one can give to a Writer. Perrin's words flow with beauty and deep observation. When reading this book it was permanently in my thoughts becoming part of my daily life.

Yes, the story of Violette is dark, like Zola, yet warming because throughout she has an inner calm and fight believing that whilst experiencing numerous personal dramas she can accept what Life has dealt her. Living as her Husband's chattel she has a strong determination to survive. I like her.

We learn much about the culture of life in rural France through Violette's observations, numerous careers, thoughts and acquaintances. The daily routines of her youth and later as a level crossing keeper and finally a cemetery caretaker will charm you. The delightful Sasha who teaches her through gardening together to let nature take its time, in allowing nature to nurture nature itself she is also learning to care for herself.

Perrin has written a brilliant novel about Society.  Often humorous, never boring, always questioning what is love. I totally understand why this International Bestseller has sold over one million copies in France.

Please, please read this book.  I'm unable to give this novel of passion the acclaim it deserves here in this one short Blog. It is simply an EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD read which has been so well translated by Hildegarde Serle.
