Jane Recommends~ perfect Christmas adventure stories for 7 to 12 year olds

I'd like to introduce you to the Author and Illustrator called William Grill who re-tells classic adventure stories for 7 to 12 year olds.

These books are BIG with wide expanses of information creating the atmospheric detail of true stories re-told for the modern enquiring mind. William Grill was the youngest person to win The Kate Greenaway Prize for illustration. I think you'll understand why.

SHACKLETON'S JOURNEY by William Gills

A detailed visual narrative of Shackleton's epic journey to Antarctica. Through his coloured pencil illustrations you examine the planning of this memorable journey. The detail is meticulously informative. You feel the snow, the hunger, the courage, the teamwork between man and animal. A brilliant book.

BANDOOLA : THE GREAT ELEPHANT RESCUE by William Grill

When war came to Myanmar (Burma) a group of fifty three elephants, and over two hundred refugees make an epic escape through jungle and over high mountains. Lead by Bandoola, a beautifully sensitive elephant, Po Toke his keeper and Elephant Bill. This true story shows us the empathy that can exist between humans and animals. How working together they can and do succeed. Again this is as much about the illustration as the text.

THE WOLVES OF CURRUMPAW by William Gill

A modern re-telling of Ernest Thompson Seton's classic wilderness drama. Set on the plains of New Mexico we live with a pack of roaming wolves with their notorious leader King Lobo. The pencil work in this book transports you deep into the minds of wolves.

I'd classify these as bean bag reads. Snuggled in your own little corner you join the adventures, experiencing them in minute detail.
